SLIDESHOW: EHS GIRLS WATER POLO: Hornets earn seventh at state

With an 8-5 win over Puyallup, the Enumclaw High girls water polo team came home with a seventh-place finish from the state water polo tounrmanet Saturday at Rogers High in Puyallup.Freshman goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister earned Honorable Mention all-state honors for her performance at the state tournament.The Hornets lost their first two games in the earlier rounds, dropping a 9-8 heart-breaker in the closing seconds to third-place finisher Wilson during the opening round of competition May 18 before falling 3-2 Friday to fourth-place finisher Auburn Riverside.In the May 18 opening round, the Hornets dug themselves a hole early, falling behind 3-0 in the first five minutes. Ali Ballard started the Enumclaw scoring on a power play with 26 seconds left in the opening period.Enumclaw fought back, outscoring the Rams in the second and thirdquarters, to pull within one goal at the end of three periods. The two defenses played tough early in the final quarter and Annie Birklid tied the game at 7-7 with 2:19 left in the game.Kelsey Sonneson put the Hornets ahead with 57 seconds left, but Wilson tied the game at eight on its next possession. Wilson's Victoria Turbull scored with 21 seconds remaining for the 9-8 win.Sonneson led the Hornet scoring with four goals. Erin Stucker added two and Ballard and Birklid scored one goal each.Friday's nail-biter was a defensive struggle with both teams playing a press defense and going scoreless in the opening quarter. The score was tied at one at halftime. The Ravens scored two in the third quarter before Ballard scored midway through the final period for the 3-2 final.Hannah Kinniburgh scored the Hornets' other goal in the loss.EHS started its five seniors – Ballard, Alexis Firlotte, Sonneson, Stucker and Alina VanRuff – along with junior center Birklid and Lesmeister, in the final game Saturday. The group came out strong and built a 4-1 advantage by the end of the opening period.The Vikings pulled within one, 6-5, going into the final quarter, but the Lady Hornets shut down and added two goals for good measure.Scoring for Enumclaw in the win were Ballard, Birklid and Sonneson with two goals each, and Stucker and Firlotte with one.Six Hornets received all-league honors for their performance during the season. Ballard and Stucker received first-team awards; Sonneson and Birklid, second team all-league honors; and Kinniburgh and Lesmeister, honorable mention all-league recognition.Enumclaw coach Bob Averill was named East Division Coach of the Year.
