Go With Gusto wins four in a row | Emerald Downs
Go With Gusto rallied past long shot Candy for Debbie and became the meet’s first four-time winner with a half-length victory Saturday in the $17,100 feature race at Emerald Downs.
With Gallyn Mitchell aboard, Go With Gusto ran one mile in 1:35.71 on a sloppy track and paid $9.60, $5 and $4.40. Roy Lumm is the trainer for owner Get Lucky Stable.
A 7-year-old New York-bred gelding, Go With Gusto has won for, in order, claiming prices of $10,000, $12,500, $15,000 and $32,000 to become the first horse reach four wins at the 33-day-old meeting. The last three have all been at one mile, and Go With Gusto is now 10-for-22 overall at Emerald Downs.
Candy for Debbie, an 18-to-1 long shot ridden by Eliska Kubinova, set the pace and held on determinedly in the stretch, paying $14.40 and $7. It was one length back to Rocky’s Quest, ridden by Javier Matias, and a $5 show payoff.
Showme Yourfriends, Mr. Mad Max, Kooky Saluki, National and Zayda rounded out the order of finish.
Mitchell, the track’s all-time leader with 1,324 riding victories, took over on Go With Gusto from Joe Crispin, who was up for the previous three wins but is now riding at Les Bois Park.
Go With Gusto’s career record is 13-8-6 in 52 starts with earnings of $133,394, including a $9,405 check for Saturday’s win.
NOTES: Frank Lucarelli continued his torrid streak with his second triple in the last three racing days and has opened a 22-19 lead over Howard Belvoir and Tim McCanna atop the trainers’ standings. Lucarelli was 3-1-0 with four starters, winning the opener with Seattle Game ($4), finishing first and second with Song of Seattle ($3.40) and Forest Bunny in the second, and taking the fourth with Zairsacat ($7.80). Lucarelli needs two more wins to become only the second trainer with 700 wins at Emerald Downs.
