Max Cooper takes Saturday $10,500 Coca-Cola Purse | Emerald Downs
Max Cooper gained the lead on the last turn and held off Uzziah for a three-quarter-length victory Saturday in the $10,500 Coca-Cola Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.
With Juan Gutierrez riding, Max Cooper ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.25 and paid $2.80, $2.10 and $2.10. Jeff Metz is the trainer for owner Constance Barns.
The victory was a collaboration of all three leaders at the 2013 meeting: Gutierrez tops the jockeys’ standings with 60 wins, Metz is first in the trainers’ standings with 24 wins, and Max Cooper became the first horse with four wins at the meeting.
A 5-year-old Florida-bred, Max Copper is 4-0-1 in six starts this season with earnings of $21,687. Overall, the gelding is 7-5-7 in 31 starts with earnings of $104,487.
Uzziah, ridden by Eliska Kubinova, made a late charge while drifting out through the stretch, but settled for second place and paid $3 and $2.10. It was two lengths back to M Two Forty, ridden by Anne Sanguinetti, and a $2.10 show payoff.
La Capitana finished fourth and Advancement, the early leader, faded to finish fifth.
Gutierrez and Isaias Enriquez rode two winners apiece, and Gutierrez leads Enriquez 60-58 in the jockeys’ standings.
