Jack the Pirate steals the Saturday feature after slow start | Emerald Downs

Jack the Pirate overcame a slow start and scored a 3 ¼-length victory over Jade Road in the $11,025 feature race for 3-year-olds and up Saturday at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Isaias Enriquez, Jack the Pirate ran one mile in 1:36.05 and paid $6, $3.20 and $2.40. Doris Harwood is the trainer for owners Michael Pollowitz and Jeffrey Wilson.

Incidentally, Harwood and her owners turned a nice profit with Jack the Pirate, netting a tidy $13,564, as the horse*which they claimed for $7,500 July 3*was reclaimed Saturday for $15,000 by trainer Blaine Wright and owner Robert Clary.

An Oregon-bred by Harbor the Gold, Jack the Pirate is 3-0-1 in seven starts with earnings of $19,235, including $6,064 for Saturday’s victory.

Jade Road, ridden by Juan Gutierrez, gained the lead on the last turn, but was unable to hold off Jack the Pirate in the stretch. Jade Road paid $3.20 and $2.10.

Faster Than Duke finished third and paid $2.20 for show. Orcas Gold and Just Gonna Be completed the order of finish.

Enriquez and Gutierrez continued their ding-dong battle for the lead, each riding two winners Saturday and Enriquez maintaining a slight 66-65 edge.
