Enumclaw volleyball team at district tournament

The Enumclaw High girls won two of four matches during last weekend’s bi-district volleyball tournament, falling a victory shy of earning at state tourney berth.

Despite seeing her team’s season come to a close, veteran coach Jackie Carel said her troops turned in a “stellar” performance.

Things started on a winning note, with the Hornets quickly dispatching Mountain View High from southwest Washington by a 3-0 score. That set up a tussle against powerful Timberline, which the Hornets lost 3-1.

“Timberline had only lost two games heading into districts, so winning a game from them really was a big deal,” Carel said.

Enumclaw bounced back to blank North Thurston 3-0 Saturday morning, keeping the Hornets in the running for a trip to the state championships. That wasn’t in the cards, however, as EHS fell 3-1 to a Kennedy Catholic team that went on to claim the bi-district’s final state entry.

Following the tourney, Carel noted her pride in a team that has just two seniors, Olivia Bannerot and Lindsey Leighton. “This is the youngest team I have ever coached at the varsity level,” she said, adding that this year’s crew lost to just three teams and all are headed to the 3A state tournament.
