White River tops Sumner in dual

White River High earned its first South Puget Sound League 3A victory of the season Thursday and Sumner suffered its first loss when the Hornets topped the host Spartans 52-21.

The No. 11-ranked Hornets captured wins in 10 of the 14 weight classes including pins by Nathan Lindner at 112 pounds, Robert Kautzman at 135, Connor Leckman at 145 and Michael J. Madden at 160.

Sumner, ranked No. 12 in the Washington Wrestling Report poll, won three of its matches by fall. Picking up pins for the Spartans were: Colby Grant at 171, Colin Fielding at 189 and Keiffer Comstock at 215.

White River earned decisions from Richard Geddes, who was a 13-8 winner over Curtis Downing at 103; Alec Williams, who won an 11-2 decision over Phillip Ramirez at 140; and Caden Pugmire, who scored 10-9 over Jared Schliesman at 152.

The match of the night ended up being Sumner’s Tyler Wooding pitted against White River’s Jeremy Gurule who took their match to overtime before Wooding scored a takedown for the 5-3 victory.

Sumner forfeited matches at 119, 125 and heavyweight, handing the Hornets 18 points.

The Hornets are in action again at 7 tonight, Wednesday, at home against No. 7-ranked Auburn Mountainview in SPSL 3A action. The Hornets also host the annual Hahto Dual Tournament Saturday with Lakes, Emerald Ridge, Capital and Clover Park scheduled to show. Wrestling, junior varsity, varsity and girls, begins at 9 a.m.

Sumner goes head-to-head at 7 tonight, Wednesday, with district and SPSL 3A rival Bonney Lake on the Panthers’ home mat and will travel to the Wilfong Invitational in Puyallup Saturday.
