Freshman Heckroth wins beam for Spartans

Sumner High gymnasts kicked off the winter campaign Dec. 3 with a three-way meet at Auburn-Mountainview, taking on the host Lions and Kent-Meridian.

SHS coach Kimmie Marton was unable to field a full squad, as not all her gymnasts had met eligibility requirements.

Leading the way for the Spartans was freshman Rachel Heckroth. She placed first on the beam with a score of 9.1; second in the bars, 8.4; third in the floor exercise, 9.55; and fifth in the vault, 8.2. Also earning Top 10 finishes was Lisbet Fernandez, who was fifth in the beam, 8.1, and 10th in the vault, 7.8; she also scored 8.0 in the floor routine and 5.6 on the bars.

Kayla O’Daniel also was in the all-around, scoring 5.3 in the vault, 5.2 on the beam, 5.1 in the floor routine, and 3.7 in the bars.

Michael Tiesta picked up a 7.5 in the vault, 6.6 in the floor routine and 5.6 in the bars.

The Spartans return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday, traveling to Emerald Ridge High School.
