Spartans split pair to open

The Sumner High roundball girls picked up a win and a loss last week as the team heads into South Puget Sound League 3A action.

The Spartans beat Spanaway Lake 57-37 Dec. 2 and lost to Yelm 55-49 Friday, with both games on the SHS court.

Sumner played Yelm to a tie in the first quarter and took a 24-22 lead into the locker room at the half with some impressive perimeter shooting.

Sumner held the lead in the game into the fourth, but gave up the advantage in the stretch run.

Angie Wagar-Sanchez had a hot hand from the outside dropping in 16 points and Erika Olsen hit for 15.

Against Spanaway Lake, Ashley Delany poured in 22 points and Thendan scored 10.

Sumner hosted North Thurston Tuesday in a nonleague game; scores were not available.

The Spartans host Peninsula at 7 p.m. Thursday in the first SPSL game for Sumner.

Sumner travels to Enumclaw for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
