Third-place finishes pace Spartans

The Sumner High School gymnasts crew picked up a pair of third-place finishes last week and will head to Kentwood for a dual meet tonight, Wednesday.

Hosting a four-team meet Jan. 14 – one of just two home meets this season – the Spartans scored 142.7 team points, trailing Thomas Jefferson, 148.15, and Kentridge, 146.05. Coming in fourth was Decatur High with 135.8 points.

Sumner’s Rachel Heckroth was tops in the all-around competition and teammates Aja Ruswick and Lisbet Fernandez placed fourth and sixth, respectively.

Heckroth dominated the four-team field, placing first in each event. She scored a 9.4 in the vault, 8.8 in the bars, 9.5 on the beam and 8.5 in the floor routine.

Other Top 10 finishes were provided by Ruswick, who placed third in both the vault, 8.6, and beam, 8.7, was fourth on the bars, 6.5, and eighth in the floor routine, 7.4, and Fernandez, who was fourth on the beam, 8.5, seventh on the bars, 6.0, and ninth in the floor routine, 7.3.

Competing Jan. 12 at Federal Way’s Todd Beamer High, the Spartans scored 144.85, trailing Puyallup High’s 169.05 and Beamer’s 163 points. Finishing fourth was North Thurston with 138.05.

Heckroth placed second in the all-around, the only Spartan finishing among the leaders.

She was second in the vault with a score of 9.0, second on the beam, 9.45, third in the bars, 8.2, and sixth in the floor routine, 8.55.
