The Sumner Spartan girls had a tough week on the basketball court, losing three games, including one defeat at the hands of district rival Bonney Lake.

Sumner lost 54-29 to Auburn Mountainview at home Saturday and had traveled to Bonney Lake Friday, losing 68-34. The girls fell to the South Puget Sound League 3A leaders White River 77-34 Jan. 13 on the road.

Battling the Lions Saturday, the Panthers fell behind early and were outscored in the first, second and third frames.

Angie Wagar-Sanchez led the Spartans with 12 points.

Against Bonney Lake, Sumner had the lead at the end of the first period 14-12, but the Panthers exploded offensively in the second, scoring 26 points to Sumner’s eight.

The rest of the night the Spartan girls played hard, but could not come up with a formula to stop the Panthers and break the team’s defensive pressure.

Reagan Wright led the scoring for Sumner with eight points.

Wagar-Sanchez played a strong defensive game, but had to fight for every point she scored against Bonney Lake’s suffocating defense, mainly coming from Rachel Wiegand.

At White River, Wagar-Sanchez scored 16.

Sumner will host Enumclaw at 7 p.m. Friday and travel to Peninsula for a 7 p.m. game Saturday.
