The Sumner High girls placed second and Bonney Lake was third Jan. 28 during a three-team gymnastics meet in the Spartan gymnasium.

The Bears from Tahoma High took top honors with 163.25 team points. Sumner followed with 140.6 and Bonney Lake tallied 131.

Bonney Lake’s Kelsi Potterf was the top local finisher, placing third in the all-around. Her top effort came in the vault, where she was second overall with a score of 8.5. She added a fourth-place finish in the beam and was fifth in the floor routine and eighth in the bars.

Other Panthers competing in the all-around were Kelli Hoffman, eighth, and Sarah Skinner, ninth. Hoffman’s evening included a third-place finish in the vault.

For the Spartans, Lisbet Fernandez placed fifth in the all-around, Aja Ruswick was seventh and Stephanie Josten was 10th. Also competing in all four events were Kayla O’Daniel and Haley Markstrom.

Fernandez had fourth-place finish in the vault, where she scored 8.0, and in the floor routine, 7.8. She added an 8.3 on the beam, good for fifth place, and a 6.35 on the bars, which netted her sixth place. Another Spartan highlight was Ruswick’s third-place, 8.2 performance in the vault.

With the regular season behind them, area gymnasts now focus on Saturday’s subdistrict meet at Kentwood High School, which sends qualifying athletes to the Feb. 14 West Central District/Southwest District meet at Auburn Mountainview High School. From there, the top three teams, 14 individuals and five all-arounds advance to the Feb. 20-21 state meet at the Tacoma Dome.
