Schwartz places third in all-around

Seattle Pacific had four individual season bests and the year’s top team total in the floor exercise, but San Jose State surpassed its season-high team score by nearly two points to win a dual meet 195.400-188.025 Saturday at Brougham Pavilion.

Senior Brianna Schwartz (Bonney Lake/Sumner High), the leading SPU all-arounder in all four meets this season, scored 38.075 points to place third. Aditi Kulkarni started the floor rotation with a 9.65 followed by a 9.675 from Jen Lehman and Veron’s 9.80. Schwartz then received a 9.725 and, after a 9.10 by Willis, Bri Steigauf capped the event with a 9.70.

The Falcon gymnasts remain at home to host the University of California at Davis at 7 p.m. Friday.

Wolverine football announces coaches

The Plateau area’s Wolverine Junior Football program has announced its coaching staff for the upcoming season. They are: Kaelon Kuro, 89ers; Coy McElderry, Sweet Peas; Vince Sinaly, Bantams; Gregg Joshlin, Midgets; and Bret Fisher, Pee Wees.

Kahne kicks off season at Daytona

Enumclaw NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kasey Kahne kicks off the 2009 season with the prelude to the Daytona 500 – the Budweiser Shootout Saturday at Daytona International Speedway in Florida.

This year’s format for the nonpoints race has chang-ed, but Kahne is still expected to make the field. Although the organization has seen significant change this season, including new ownership, fans will find Kahne behind the wheel of No. 9 Budweiser.

Local fans can tune in television coverage beginning at 5 p.m. on FOX.
