Relays, distance runners kick off season strong
Rain and cold winds welcomed eight boys and girls track teams to the South Puget Sound League 3A jamboree Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
It was the first time this season coaches got a look at their athletes in competition. Each athlete could compete in only two events.
White River’s 2x400 relay team finished first as they edged out Auburn Mountainview down the final 50 meters. The foursome of Collin Green, Kramer Green, Tyler Cash and Sonny Frye posted a mark of 1 minute, 40.90 seconds, while Auburn Mountainview’s time was 1:41.17.
The Sumner girls won the 4x200 relay, one second ahead of Auburn Mountainview. Leah DeDominas, Carson Blankenship, Lauren Bul-zomi and Ashlee Sincraugh posted a time of 1:55.26.
White River’s squad of Donna Lisenbee, Ajanna Russell, Jessica Linder and Clelsea May finished third at 2:01.72.
Sumner’s Zach Barry proved he is one of the top contenders in the SPSL 3A in the 3,200 meters as he posted a winning time of 10:24.0, while Bonney Lake’s Brandon Baumchen was one second behind at 10:25.2.
Enumclaw’s Joe Berger, who finished fourth, was nearly five seconds behind Berry at 10:28.9 and freshman Marcus Dickerson of White River was fifth at 10:36.8.
In the girls’ 3,200 meters, Theresa Edwards of Bonney Lake was more than seven seconds faster than White River’s Ashley Llapitan. Edwards’ winning time was 12:03.10 and Llapitan finished at 12:10.5.
In third place was Carissa Gwerder of Enumclaw at 12:23.7 and White River’s Lauryn Wate was fourth at 12:32.9. Gabby DeGoede and Stefani Castile of Sumner finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at 12:42.8 and 12:44.3.
In the 100-meter dash, Enumclaw’s Kyle Foster finished second behind Franklin Pierce’s Josh Moore at 11:63. Moore’s time was 11:32.
In the girls’ 100, Blankenship was third at 13.98, more than a second behind the first-place winner Poston Germe of Franklin Pierce. Becca Cross of Enumclaw was fourth at 14.06 and Russell took seventh at 14.13.
Enumclaw’s Larry Calvert sprinted ahead of the pack for a four-second win in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.14, while Matt Dickson of White River finished third at 2:09.45 and Berry was fourth at 1:12.43. Bonney Lake’s Reed Hawkins was fifth at 2:14.12.
Sumner finished second and third in the girls’ 400. Sincraugh was second at 1:03.69 and Bulzomi was third at 1:04.02. Teammate Tessa Hansen was sixth at 1:06.16. Emily Eilerton of Enumclaw was fourth at 1:05.67.
In the boys’ 400, Collin Gray of White River took second with a mark of 52.23 and Abe Kellog of Enumclaw was fourth at 53.02. Calvert was sixth at 54.85, while teammates Braden Timpe (55.46) and Branden Russell (55.52) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the hurdles, Kellogg was first in the 110 at 16.06 and White River’s Kramer Green was second at 16.86.
Jackie Tomlin of Sumner won the girls’ 110 hurdles at 18.07, while teammate Lisbet Fernandez was second at 18.57.
In the boys’ field events, White River’s Grant Peckham won the shot put and discus events.
Peckham and Enumclaw’s Chance Olson finished a half-inch part. Peckham’s throw was 45-6 1/2. Alex Carter of Sumner was the only other thrower to reach the 40-foot mark with a fourth-place mark of 40-8.75.
Peckham’s throw of 134-8 was enough to win the discus as his closest competitor was more than 23 feet away.
Sumner’s Kayla Roberts was second in the shot and discus. Her throws were 31-2.75 in the shot and 84-7 in the discus. Natosha Lyonias was fourth in both events. She had a toss of 81-2 in the discus and 29-7.25 in the shot put.
Courtney Perkins of Sumner won the girls’ high jump at 4-6 and White River’s Austin Shirey won the boys. Shirey won the pole vault at 11-0.
In the long jump, Hunter Chadwick of White River was second at 18-9 in the boys division. Stephanie Schreiner of Enumclaw won the girls’ event at 15-6, while Bonney Lake’s Kimber Kober was secind at 14-6.75.
Enumclaw was 1-2 in the girls’ pole vault. Jillian Koontz won at 7-0 and Hailey Olafson’s mark was 6-5.
