Enumclaw Track and Field: Schreiner is state’s top 3A female long jumper Enumclaw keeps record perfect

The Enumclaw High boys improved their mark to 4-0 in South Puget Sound League 3A track and field competition Thursday afternoon with victories over Sumner and Lakes.

On the other side of the double-dual meet, the Hornet girls suffered their first loss in three seasons, falling to Sumner while easily routing Lakes.

Final scores showed the Hornet boys slipping past Lakes 74-71 and defeating Sumner 87-57. For the girls, Sumner had the edge 78-67 while EHS trounced Lakes 109-40.

The secret to the boys’ success is consistency, according to coach Janelle Stussy. She points to such standouts as Larry Calvert in the 1,600 meters, Abe Kellogg in the hurdle races and Braden Timpe in the 800 meters.

The girls’ success has come from some familiar names. Stephanie Schreiner recently established an Enumclaw High record in the long jump and, at the time, has posted the best Class 3A effort in the state. She also has remained a top-notch performer in the 400 meters.

Stephanie Jones continues as one of the premier athletes in the league, winning hurdle races and consistently scoring high in the jumps.

The competition remains tough Thursday afternoon, especially on the girls’ side, as the Hornets travel to Bonney Lake to challenge both the host Panthers and Peninsula High.
