Sumner Soccer: Schmuck’s goals save SHS

Martin Schmuck scored two goals while three other players each scored in the Sumner Spartans’ 5-1 South Puget Sound League 3A boys soccer win over Clover Park Friday at home.

Schmuck scored in the 12th minute off a Benji O’Brien assist, then added another goal from a Sam Hoyt assist in the 45th minute as Sumner took a 2-0 at halftime. Mike Orphan scored 10 minutes into the second half with Lloyd Merritt getting the assist.

After the Warriors scored, O’Brien scored off a Jacob Pierce assist and Brandon Denney finished out the scoring for Sumner with Schmuck assisting.

In a 2-1 league loss to Franklin Pierce in Parkland April 21, Sumner scored early as Philip Kyllo hit an unassisted kick in the third minute of play.

The Cardinals scored twice in the final 12 minutes to win.

Sumner host Peninsula Friday and plays at state-ranked White River Tuesday.
