Enumclaw tennis: Five advance to district tournament

Doubles teams Lauren Redman and Anna Nelson and Breanna Pierce and Julie Sanders and singles player Morgan Johnson will represent Enumclaw High at the West-Central District girls tennis tournament.
The West-Central District tournament was schedueld to begin Tuesday at Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway, Wash., and continue Thursday and Saturday. The top seven advance to the state tournament May 20-30 at Vancouver Tennis Center in Vancouver, Wash.
“It’s been an incredible year,” coach Rick Carel said.
The Hornets, who won a league make-up contest 5-0 with White River Friday, were scheduled to complete the regular season Monday with Peninsula. An EHS victory would give the team an unblemished 14-0 record and the South Puget Sound League 3A title. A loss would give the Hornets a share of the crown.
Enumclaw’s two doubles teams battled each other for seeding into the district tournament Thursday at the subdistrict tournament in Lacey, Wash. EHS’s No. 2 doubles squad of Pierce and Sanders gave the Hornets’ No. 1 a run for its money. The pair captured the first set 7-5 with Redman and Nelson and were leading 5-3 during a 7-point tiebreaker in the second set, before Redman and Nelson snatched away the victory. Redman and Nelson took the third set 6-3 and will enter the district tournament as the No. 3 seed. Pierce and Sanders take the No. 5 seed.
Johnson also enters the district tournament as the No. 5 seed in singles play.
