White River soccer: Overtime loss to Prairie kills Hornets’ advance

The White River Hornets suffered a 2-1 overtime loss Thursday night, putting an end to the 2009 soccer season.

The Hornets, who finished with an impressive overall mark of 12-3-2, fell to Prairie High at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

White River jumped on top early when Jarrod Adams booted a goal in the sixth minute of play. The lead stood until the 73rd minute, when Prairie’s Kevin Pepin scored an unassisted goal, forcing overtime. It didn’t take Prairie long to bring the contest to an end, as Filberto Almaguer found the net just three minutes into the OT session.

The Hornets had kicked off postseason play May 12 with a 1-0 victory over the Hazen Highlanders. The crossover game between the Hornets, the No. 5 team from the South Puget Sound League 3A, and Hazen, the No. 5 from the Seamount League, went into a shootout.

White River’s Justin Chase, Evan Robertson, Ricky Mau and Nathan Jung delivered during the shootout, giving the Hornets the edge.

White River enjoyed remarkable success through much of its season, but slipped to 1-3-1 in its final five games.
