Enumclaw track and field: Kellogg leaps to second
A dozen Enumclaw High Hornets capped their 2009 track and field campaigns with an appearance in the Class 3A state championships, contested Thursday through Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
The top EHS performance was turned in by Abe Kellogg, who raced to a second-place finish in the 300-meter high hurdles. He ran to a personal-best time of 39.07 seconds to earn his Star Track medal.
He wasn’t alone on the victory stand, though.
Enumclaw’s Braden Timpe had qualified for state in the 800 meters and, once in Tacoma, clocked a time of 1:57.47, giving him a sixth-place medal.
Larry Calvert had earned a state berth in the 800 as well, running in the preliminary heats but failing to advance to the finals.
Aside from qualifying in their individual events, the three were joined by Brandon Russell in a state-qualifying 1,600-meter relay team. Against tough competition, the foursome did not make the finals.
The Hornet girls were highlighted by Stephanie Jones and Stephanie Schreiner, each competing in four events at Star Track.
Jones capped her stellar career by taking home three medals, including one for a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles where she raced to a time of 45.46.
Jones also found her way to the medal stand after a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles and a fifth-place performance in the triple jump. She ran a 15.54 in the hurdles and went 36 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump. She also was a member of the Hornets’ 400-meter relay team.
Schreiner received a state medal after running a 1:01.94 in the 400 meters. She had also qualified in the long jump and 200 meters and was on the 400-meter relay squad.
Also making state meet appearances were Nicole Swenson and Becca Cross, who rounded out the Hornets’ 400-meter team, and the EHS 1,600-meter relay team of Amanda Gray, Shelby Condon, Carissa Gwerder and Emily Eilertson. Both Gwerder and Eilertson had qualified for state individually, as well, earning berths in the 800 meters.
