EHS WATER POLO: Hornets capture fifth at tournament
The Enumclaw High boys water polo team lost a league game to Wilson Sept. 22, but finished play with a fifth-place showing at the Auburn Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The Enumclaw Hornets lost to 2008 state runner-up Wilson, 20-4, at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.
Hornets scoring in the game were Travis Culp, with two goals, and Garrett Hall and Shane Jackson with one goal each.
At the Auburn tournament, the Hornets finished with a 2-1-3 record for fifth place. In Friday’s opener, Enumclaw tied Auburn Mountainview. The Hornets fell behind 3-0 in the first half before Hall put EHS on the board with a goal almost three minutes into the second quarter. Both teams scored once more in the final two minutes of the quarter before taking the halftime break with the Hornets down 4-2.
The teams went scoreless for more than three minutes into the second half, when Enumclaw earned a power play on a Mountainview exclusion foul. After taking a timeout, the Hornets’ Bennon VanHoof scored during the six-on-five opportunity to pull the Hornets within one. Zach Petersen tied the score at four with 33 seconds remaining in the third period.
Enumclaw went up 5-4 20 seconds in to the final quarter on a Culp goal, but the Lions answered with 1:52 left in the game. Both teams missed on scoring opportunities in the final minute to settle for the 5-all stalemate.
In the Hornets’ second game, EHS scored once in the first period, on a goal by Hall, and once in the second, by Petersen, to take a 2-0 lead over the Auburn into the second half. But the Trojans roared back, holding Enumclaw scoreless, while scoring seven goals of their own, for the 7-2 final.
After dropping games to Lakes and Auburn Riverside Saturday, the Hornets wrapped up play at the tournament with wins over teams from Puyallup and Peninsula.
Against Puyallup, Hornet Logan Ross scored three goals, while Culp, Hall and VanHoof scored one apiece. Hall, Petersen and goalkeeper Josh Musick tallied two assists each in the win.
With Peninsula, VanHoof scored five goals, Hall added four and Petersen, Culp and Will Cooper scored one goal each. Goalkeeper Musick had 13 saves, two assists and two steals in the win. Also gathering steals against the Seahawks were Hall with five; Petersen, three; Ross, Cooper and VanHoff with two steals each; and Culp with one.
EHS was scheduled to host Peninsula Tuesday in a league contest; results came too late to report here. The Hornets also have home games against Auburn Thursday and Stadium and Mark Morris Saturday.
