SLIDESHOW: Black Diamond Triathlon brings out more than 1,300
More than 1,300 swimmers, bicyclists and runners, including more than 50 from the Plateau, turned out for two days of Black Diamond Triathlon competition Sept. 26 and 27 at Nolte State Park near Enumclaw.
Bonney Lake's Chris Blair, 41, finished first in master males and second overall among the 303 participants in the Olympic Triathlon race. He finished the 1.5-mile swim, 40-mile bicycle ride and 10-mile run with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 12 seconds.
Other local participants in that race were: Pete Holderbein, 53, Ravensdale; Duane Reathaford, 46, Black Diamond; John Bahlenhorst, 49, Black Diamond; Doug Mowbray, 40, Lake Tapps; Kristin Harbert, 21, Bonney Lake; and Teresa Moffatt, 43, Enumclaw. Harbet finished eighth among women ages 20 to 24.
Fawn Peterson of Enumclaw finished eighth among females in the Olympic Duathlon. She finished the 40-mike bike ride and 10-mile run in 2:40.29. There were 303 overall participants in the duathlon.
Several Plateau residents opted to give the Sprint Triathlon a try. Scott Cleary of Buckley and Barry Carel of Sumner were among the top finishers in the .5-mile swim, 11-mile bike ride and 2.8-mile run. Cleary, 27, covered the course in 1:08.32 for ninth overall among males. Carel, 44, crossed the line in 1:16.09 to place 10th among master males.
There were 264 participants overall, including local athletes Kurt Kenyon, 37, Lake Tapps; Tom Hassenauer, 49, Enumclaw; Emil Hillding, 31, Wilkeson; Larry Gregerson, 55, Enumclaw; Claire Marine, 17, Enumclaw; Sterling Frye, 17, Buckley; Katie Henry, 36, Bonney Lake; Kathy Korsch, 53, Enumclaw; Tiffany Ewings, 25, Enumclaw; Jessica Cavanaugh, 35, Black Diamond; Marsha Nelson, 60, Bonney Lake; Katie Hadley, 30, Bonney Lake; Kacee Barber, 26, Lake Tapps; Bill Kelly, 70, Lake Tapps; Jennifer Westby, 25, Enumclaw; Sue Lindner, 55, Enumclaw; and Angela Lillis, 27, Enumclaw.
A number of Plateau athletes gave the Tri-It, Novice, event a go. They were among 63 who swam .25 miles, pedaled 11 miles and ran 2.8 miles. Mike Ward of Black Diamond, 39, finished in 1:13.39 for sixth among overall males, while Jennifer Moore of Bonney Lake completed the course in 1:17.29, fourth among females. In the overall master division, Patricia Thul of Buckley, 48, was eighth and Wendy Ward, 44, of Black Diamond was ninth.
Sara Tierney, 48, of Bonney Lake and Connie Poleski, 38, of Enumclaw also gave it a try.
The Half Marathon drew a number of runners, 133 specifically, including 35-year-old Ronald Alford of Enumclaw, who finished in 1:27.58 for sixth overall.
Others were: Ben Wright, 31, Enumclaw; Michael Yadrick Jr., 33, Lake Tapps; Russell Peters, 46, Enumclaw; Alan Thesenvitz, 24, Black Diamond; Tom Goulet, 52, Black Diamond; Tina Jewett, 38, Enumclaw; Allison Wright, 31, Enumclaw; Jessica Witte, 39, Lake Tapps; Courtney Stewart, 32, Enumclaw; Paula Schwary, 51, Bonney Lake; Deborah Morrison, 58, Enumclaw; and Michelle Larson, 32, Buckley.
The Black Diamond Long Course Triathlon brought 226 athletes to Deep Lake for the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13-mile run.
Black Diamond's Kelly Richards, 40, was fourth among females with a time of 5:34.40.
Enumclaw's Roger Sherwood, 30, also had a top time finishing in 5:34.40. Black Diamond's Rebecca Sullivan, 33, also finished the course.
In a field of 17 for the Endurance Duathlon, Enumclaw's Jeff Taylor, 54, finished eighth in the master males division. He finished the 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run in 5:52.06.
