EHS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Sanders keys win with assists

The Enumclaw High volleyball bunch survived a week rife with homecoming distractions, winning a league match Oct. 6 against Sumner, but falling 3-0 the next day to Timberline.

“I was proud of the way the girls focused on volleyball against Sumner, because that was really an important victory for us,” EHS coach Jackie Carel said. “Sometimes with all of the stuff going on during Homecoming week it is difficult to concentrate.

“I was especially pleased with the fact that we won that third close game against Sumner. A lot of matches can swing either way in that pivotal third game and thankfully this time we didn’t let them back into the match.”

The Hornets moved to 1-2 in league and 6-3 overall after last week’s action.

The Hornets claimed the Sumner match 25-21, 25-14 and 25-23 behind junior setter Gina Sanders.

Sanders appeared to be everywhere, recording 27 assists, and sophomore standout HayleeMae Dennis and senior 6-footer Katina Ferguson both took advantage of Sanders’ sets, combining for 20 kills.

On Oct. 7 at Timberline, Enumclaw never found its groove and quickly folded in three games.

“As hard as we tried to get something going against Timberline we just never did,” Carel said.

Tuesday, Enumclaw traveled to Franklin Pierce; results came too late to include here but will be posted at www.courierherald.com.

Enumclaw hosts Clover Park at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

The schedule appears kind to the Hornets this week. As of last week, neither Franklin Pierce or Clover Park had won a game.
