EHS VOLLEYBALL: Hornets split a pair on court

Enumclaw High’s volleyball squad split a pair of matches last week, pushing its record to 4-3 and likely gaining a spot in the subdistrict tournament.

The Hornets look to be the No. 4 of No. 5 team out of the South Puget Sound League 3A, earning a trip to Mount Rainier High School Friday.

Enumclaw got off on the wrong foot Oct. 19, losing 25-12, 25-13 and 25-20 at Lakes High.

“Lakes didn’t surprise me at all, because I predicted that they would be SPSL 3A champions by the end of the season,” Enumclaw coach Jackie Carel said.

Carel was far happier with the outcome two days later, when Enumclaw hosted Peninsula and won in five games.

After winning the initial tilt 25-21, Enumclaw let the next two games slip away before snapping out of it in time to win game four 25-20, forcing the match into a fifth sudden death overtime bout.

Enumclaw bounced out to an early advantage in the tiebreaker and cruised to a 15-9 victory over the Seahawks in the deciding battle.

Carel was pleased with the balance her contingent displayed in turning away the Seahawk threat.

It was senior night at EHS and a couple of 5-foot, 8-inch senior hitters in Breanna Pierce and Jamie Emerson had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while senior Haylee Kohler started at setter and did a good job of distributing the ball with 26 assists.

Enumclaw traveled to White River Monday night; results of that match came too late to include here, but watch for scores at www.courierherald.com.
