EHS GIRLS WRESTLING: Bailey captures season’s first wrestling title

Defending state champion Chantelle Bailey picked up where the Enumclaw High wrestler left off in February, pinning down the 171-pound championship at Saturday’s Emerald Ridge wrestling tournament.

Bailey won her opening match 5-2, scored a 1-minute pin in her second match and won the title 6-1.

Hornet teammates Kassandra Renfrow and Rose Johnson brought home third-place finishes and Logan Erkskine finished sixth.

Wrestling at 152 pounds, Renfrow, who sat out most of last season injured, earned her first win as a Hornet with a third-round fall. She lost her second match by pin, but rallied for a third-match technical fall victory for third place.

Johnson earned her third-place finish with a 27-second opening-match pin and another fall in her third match of the day.

Erkskine, at 160, opened the tournament with a 30-second pin, but then lost her next two, the last by one-point after her opponent scored a closing-round reversal, for sixth.

First-year Hornet wrestler Miranda Long made her debut a memorable one. The 103-pounder lost her first match 8-4 to eventual champion Crystal Sparks of Bethel, but won her second match with an 18-second pin. She then lost her third match.

The Hornets are home with Lakes today, Wednesday. Wrestling is expected to begin at 6 p.m. The team heads to Foss High in Tacoma Saturday for another tournament.
