EHS GIRLS WRESTLING: Hornets claim four titles at Foss
December 14, 2009 · 2:18 PM
Paced by four champions and three runners-up, the Enumclaw High girls wrestling team walked away from Foss High’s tournament Saturday with plenty of smiles.
The state-ranked Hornets put together a good run in the round-robin tournament that pitted wrestlers by weight and experience.
Defending state champion Chantelle Bailey kept her undefeated streak alive for the Hornets, winning her title with two pins and a couple of big decisions.
The tournament was a confidence-builder for Hornet Logann Erskine, who won all her matches by pin on the way to her crown.
The same was true for Kassandra Renfrow, who sat last season out with an injury. She won both her matches by fall, one in 30 seconds, to claim her title.
Hornet freshman Jade Paterson didn’t waste any time learning the sport. The martial arts expert pinned three straight opponents for her championship.
Maranda Long went 1-1 to finish second for EHS. Teammates Breanna Flaquinti and Rose Johnson also finished second. Both split their matches.
The Hornets also picked up two victories during a dual meet against Lakes Dec. 9. Wrestling their first matches before a home crowd, Long won a 15-7 decision over her Lancer opponent, while Renfrow lost in a late-round pin.
Coach Jerry Scheidt said if his team can stay healthy, they should fare well. The Hornets are scheduled to travel to Peninsula tonight, Wednesday, and are off to Puyallup Saturday for the Rogers Holiday tournament.
