EHS BOYS BASKETBALL: Hornets continue march through league contests
January 25, 2010 · 1:47 PM
Enumclaw High’s boys basketball squad maintained a stranglehold on first place in the South Puget Sound League 3A, boosting its mark to 10-0 with a 71-60 home-court victory Jan. 19 against Bonney Lake and a 70-49 conquest Friday at Sumner.
Against the Panthers, almost every Enumclaw starter hit for double figures, with seniors Tarren VanTrojen, Taylor Meyers and Jayson Lewis combining for 46 points.
“Every player on this team is healthy right now, with the exception of Ben Waters, and we are hoping to get him back in the fold in about a month,” EHS coach Phil Engebretsen said. “We are playing great basketball, but I wouldn’t exactly say we are in cruise control by any stretch.
“But if we continue to improve defensively and maintain our unselfish philosophy, by passing the ball around and looking for the opened man on offense, we should be OK,” he said.
Enumclaw puts its untarnished record on the line against another pair of SPSL 3A foes this week.
The unbeaten Hornets hosted winless Peninsula Tuesday, with results coming too late to report here; look for the score at www.courierherald.com.
Enumclaw heads for Clover Park at 7 p.m. Friday to play a pesky Warrior crew that handed Enumclaw its only regular-season loss a year ago.
“The guys on this team haven’t forgotten that close Warrior win on that cold Saturday last December,” Engebretsen said. “Paying Clover Park back should be just about all of the motivation this group needs.”
