Bonney Lake girls earn state trip; White River still alive; Sumner out

The Bonney Lake High girls punched their ticket to the Class 3A state basketball tournament Saturday night, beating Capital High 56-49. On the same night, on different courts, the Sumner Spartan girls saw their season come to an end and the White River Hornets lost but will fight another day.

Bonney Lake is guaranteed a state trip but will play twice more in the West Central-Southwest District tournament. The Panthers will take on Prairie High at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kent’s ShoWare Center. If they win Wednesday’s contest, the Panthers would play March 5 for the district title. The worst the Bonney Lake girls will fare is being the No. 5 state seed from the district tournament.

Playing in a winner-to-state game of its own, White River lost 64-58 to Prairie High of Battle Ground.

The Hornets play at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Clover Park High School, taking on a familiar foe in Auburn Mountainview. The Hornets and Lions played twice during the regular season with White River picking up a pair of narrow victories. Wednesday’s game is a winner-to-state, loser-out affair.

Sumner High opened district play in a loser-out game and saw its season conclude with a 67-52 loss to Lakes High.
