White River off to a fast-flying start

White River High School started the prep baseball season white hot, winning five straight games and recording double digit runs in each of those outings.

In its March 13 against Yelm, WRHS snuffed out the Tornadoes 11-1, then won two more games at home feasting on Fife 13-5 March 15 and pummeling Peninsula 12-3 Thursday. White River hit the road Friday afternoon and blanked Clover Park 21-0 on the Warriors’ diamond and Saturday hosted 4A Bethel High, ambushing the Braves 11-1.

In its solitary road game, White River senior centerfielder Payden Cawley-Lamb, stroked the Warrior pitcher’s first offering for an inside-the-park home run and the Hornets never looked back. His bat has been on fire, as he is leading the Hornets’ bevy of hot swatters, averaging .588 from the plate.

Meanwhile, the RBI king thus far for White River is senior shortstop Connor Williams, who is hitting .540 and already has a dozen runs batted in.

Spearheading White River’s endeavors from the mound is senior hurler Dustin Stroud, who in 10 solid innings of work is 2-0 and has complied an earned run average of 0.70.

White River skipper Mike Williams, in his 14th season, says that while the seasoned bunch of seniors on this campaign’s WRHS contingent is pleased with getting the season off to such a good start, his optimism is guarded.

“There are so many great teams in this league that on any given day one team can beat another. One year when I was coaching here, we started off 10-0 and then proceeded to lose the next eight straight,” he said.
