WRHS FASTPITCH: Delay works for Hornets

White River fastpitch coach Joe Sprouse convinced the schedule makers to shuffle a tandem of South Puget Sound League 3A contests from last week to this week.

His club was incomplete because so many girls contributed to the basketball team’s state run they couldn’t have accumulated enough practice days to be eligible for last week’s league encounters.

A pair of games, Monday against Peninsula and Tuesday against Auburn Mountainview, should now be posted at

The Hornet fastpitch contingent is committed to take the bus to Lakes High today, Wednesday, and head to Clover Park Thursday. The fast and furious week concludes Friday at White River against a talented flock of Franklin Pierce Cardinals.

In nonleague games last week the Hornets suffered the normal rust problems of the season’s early games, but managed to shake the cobwebs off their bats and gloves in time to edge Eatonville’s Cruisers 7-6 and Yelm’s Tornadoes 10-6.

In the game against the Cruisers it was the thievery of White River’s fleet-footed Miriam Alavi and the experienced pitching of Meaghan Dietrich that did the trick. Alavi stole four bases, perhaps having something to do with the seven Eatonville errors and Dietrich recorded five strikeouts en route to the narrow triumph.

In the Yelm contest WRHS employed the steady right arm of its other pitcher Sarah Steinmetz. Additionally, Steinmetz helped herself going 2-for-4 from the plate as did Jordynn Smith and Aubrey Custer, to help the Hornets ring up seven runs in the fifth frame and salt away the victory.
