White River tennis continues to keep matches close

The White River High girls tennis team appears on the cusp of a turnaround. The girls dropped 3-2 matches to Franklin Pierce, Lakes and Peninsula that could have gone their way.

Against the Cardinals April 19, the Hornets’ doubles teams picked up the wins. Kelli Hoffman and Heidi Lyons battled to a 9-7 tiebreaking victory in their first set and followed it with a solid 6-2 win.

Katie Durrant and Taylor Wombacher dropped their first set 7-5, then won the next two, 7-5, 6-2.

Haley Havelock and Courtney Hall battled to a 6-4 loss in their opener and then dropped a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set.

It was a similar scenario April 20 with Lakes. Morgan Wilson went three sets, taking the first and third 6-1 for the victory.

This time the close sets went to Havelock and Hall who won 7-5, 11-9. Hoffman and Lyons won the first set 6-4, but dropped the next two 6-2. Durrant and Wombacher lost 6-0, 7-5.

With Peninsula Thursday, it was Havelock and Hall won the first set 6-1, dropped the second 6-4, but came back to win the third 6-2.

Hoffman and Lyons won two straight, 6-2, 6-3.

Durrant and Wombacher battled to to a 7-4 loss in the tiebreaker and then dropped the second set 6-3.

The Hornets are 1-5 in league, 3-6 overall.
