ENUMCLAW WATER POLO: Hornet water polo heads to state tournament
The Enumclaw High girls water polo team clinched its fifth straight trip to the state tournament by beating Stadium 9-8 and Puyallup 18-10 at Saturday’s state-qualifying tournament at Auburn.
The Hornets face Gig Harbor in the first round at state. Game time is 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Rogers High in Puyallup. Play continues Friday and Saturday.
In Saturday’s opening game of the state-qualifying tournament, Enumclaw and Stadium tied seven times with neither team holdin more than a two-goal advantage until the final 15 seconds when junior Kelsey Sonneson scored the final of her two goals for the game from five meters.
Also scoring for EHS in the win were Erin Stucker with three goals and Ali Ballard and Lindsay Bowden with two goals each.
In the second game of the tournament, Stadium beat Puyallup 12-11, leaving Enumclaw to face the Vikings for a state berth. Bowden and Stucker led EHS scorers with six goals each. Sonneson added three, Ballard chipped in two and Rachel Deonigi scored one.
The Hornets finished their regular season with a record of 13-6-1 after a 13-12 loss to Puyallup Thursday for third place in the East Division of the Girls Water Polo League with a 7-3 record. In that contest, EHS was led by Bowden’s five goals and Stucker’s four. Ballard Sonneson and Deonigi each added one.
