White River High opened postseason play with a victory – the only South Puget Sound League 3A team to do so – but saw its 2010 campaign come to a close Saturday with a 4-0 loss to Mount Rainier.

The Hornets had placed fifth in the SPSL 3A standings to grab the final postseason berth, landing a May 12 subdistrict contest against Evergreen High of the Seamount League. In a loser-out game at Foster High, White River went into overtime to knock off the Wolverines 2-1.

White River grabbed a 1-0 lead shortly before intermission when Diego Pelayo scored an unassisted goal. Evergreen’s Kenny Albright answered with a game-tying goal at 65 minutes and regulation play ended with the team’s deadlocked. Pelayo kept the Hornets’ season alive with an OT goal.

The victory advanced White River to the West Central District tournament and a Saturday afternoon date with Mount Rainier, the Seamount League’s regular-season champion. The game was played at Highline Stadium in Burien.

Things went wrong for the Hornets early on, as the Rams’ Darwin Jones scored two goals early in the game. He added two more in the second half as Mount Rainier rolled into the next round.
