Gymnasts from Enumclaw, Bonney Lake and Sumner competed at the Class 2A/3A state gymnastics championships Friday and Saturday in the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
The Hornets continued their tradition of high-flying performances with a fourth-place finish, 160.475 points. The girls as a team scored 40.15 on the vault, 35.6 on the bars, 39.575 on the beam and 45.150 on the floor.
Senior Victoria Hernandez finished her high-school gymnastic career making the Saturday individual finals and taking sixth place all-around with a score of 36.475. She tied for third on the floor with a 9.525, tied for sixth on the vault with 9.475 and was ninth on the bars with 9.025.
After the meet Hernandez described the two days as bittersweet.
“After the floor, it was really hard,” she said. “I started crying. I knew it was the last routine I will do. It is so much fun…. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s my favorite sport.”
Elise Dunning also competed Saturday taking 15th on the floor with 8.925.
Dunning was competing in her first state gymnastic tournament and said it was a “little bit” stressful but “I tried really hard not to get too nervous.”
Dunning took 20th all-around scoring 33.575.
EHS coach Regina Chynoweth and her assistant coach and daughter Alana both said how well the girls did all season, winning league, coming second in district and fourth in state.
“I am so proud of these girls and they have worked hard all season,” Regina Chynoweth said.
Emi Bacha competed Saturday for the Spartans in the vault. She took eighth with a score of 9.45. She was 64th all-around with score of 24.825.
Bacha said it was really fun and “really stressful trying to place.” She said the beam is the most difficult of the four routines.
Hailey Taylor took the silver in the floor exercise for the Panthers with a score of 9.6. She finished 65th all-around with score of 24.450.
Being here is an amazing feeling,” Taylor said. “I came here and I really wanted to lay it all out on the floor and I did. It’s my favorite.”
Taylor said she worked hard all season. She chose and mixed the music for her routine, AC/DC’s “Back in Black” and “Ironman.”
“I did it for my dad because it’s his favorite movie and favorite band,” she said.
