Bowers and Brown pair up for SHS shutout

Sumner High’s boys soccer team improved to 2-1-2 with a 1-0 nonleague win over Timberline Friday in Lacey.

Martin Schmuch scored off a Benji O’Brien assist in the 46th minute, while goalkeeper Zach Bowers recorded the shutout.

Sumner had opened South Puget Sound League 3A action with a 4-0 shutout of the Lakes Lancers March 24 at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Schmuck scored two goals in the first half off assists from Jacob Pierce and Tucker Bateman. Spencer Ewing scored off a Dan Gunstone assist in the 37th minute as Sumner went into intermission with a 3-0 lead.

In the 51st minute, Brandon Denny scored an unassisted goal to close out the scoring.

Bowers and Evan Brown combined for the shutout.

Sumner travels to play Yelm today, Wednesday, in nonleague action. Game time is 6 p.m. The team travels to Auburn Mountainview Monday for a 7 p.m. match.
