The Enumclaw High boys finished the regular season with a 3-7 record and head into this weekend’s subdistrict tournament as the No. 5 seed from the South Puget Sound League 3A.

Jan. 30, the Hornets got knocked out of their saddle by Lakes 83-57. The next evening, playing at home, Enumclaw managed a major upset of Auburn Mountainview.

EHS hung with the Lions, trailing by a scant two points at intermission 32-30. Auburn Mountainview could not shake the tenacious Enumclaw bunch in the second half, as the Hornets put on a great show for the home faithful, outscoring the Lions to register the 68-64 upset.

Just as he had the previous evening, guard Tony Chynoweth rung up 21 points, but the difference was his backcourt sidekick Perry Rockwood duplicating the effort. Both shot 50 percent from 3-point territory and had a handful of steals.

Additionally, Chynoweth had 10 rebounds and his brother Ryan buried a pair of critical free throws with six seconds left to seal the win.

Unfortunately for the Hornets, that was their last win of the week. Enumclaw then played back-to-back meetings with Bonney Lake Friday and Saturday, losing both.

Friday, EHS hit the road and suffered a 72-69 loss. The next night, in Enumclaw, BLHS came on like gangbusters and won 75-69, with all five Panther starters notching double figures.

The sparkling jewel in the crown for Chynoweth was the 32 points he recorded at Bonney Lake Friday; the Panthers apparently took exception and held him to half that many the next night.

Chynoweth scored 90 points during last week’s Hornet dance card.
