The Enumclaw High soccer team will play two nonleague games in the coming days, gearing up for the April 1 South Puget Sound League 3A season opener against Bonney Lake.

The Hornets will travel to Steilacoom for a 6 p.m. game Friday and head south to challenge Capital High at 7 p.m. Monday.

The Hornets’ first week of play brought mixed success. Enumclaw High defeated Olympia 1-0 March 16 and lost 4-1 Thursday at Yelm.

The season-opening victory over the Bears came on a slick Southwood field in Enumclaw.

“We definitely played pretty well,” EHS coach Skip Ashley said, noting that the visitors applied pressure the first 15 minutes but the teams played even the rest of the way. The game’s only goal came in the 56th minute when Mitch Stewart blasted a shot that the Olympia keeper blocked, only to have Jordan Savage knock home the loose ball.

EHS goalkeeper Pierce Beigh, playing his first varsity game, registered “several very good saves,” Ashley said.

The loss to Yelm saw a lot of younger players seeing varsity time. Ashley noted that five of his starting players were in Seattle watching the Major League Soccer debut of the Sounders FC squad.

Enumclaw’s lone goal was scored by Justin Williams.
