With 33 bodies in the water, most with competitive experience, the Enumclaw High girls swim team is already eyeing the postseason. But that’s not until late October and early November, which leaves plenty of time to get faster.

“We’re hoping to improve our times and qualify for districts and state,” coach Ann Bettencourt said of the Lady Hornets. “They’ve been working really hard. They’re really enthusiastic.”

Leading the way in the 2009 season will be captains and returning seniors Lindsay Bowden and Taylor Hassenauer. Others expected to make an immediate impact are returning letterwinners Erin Stucker, Erin Wessler and Suzy and Rachel Holston.

A large group of incoming freshmen with club team experience is also a bright spot for the squad.

Of the 33 in the water, the impressive number came in diving, with seven ladies taking to the board including returning veterans Alicia McDougall and Breanna Flaquinti. Returning to help them out will be dive coach Steve Bannerot.

Bettencourt is also getting assistance this season from 1989 Enumclaw High graduate Laini (Houk) Goodlett, who was a leader on the Hornets’ 1989 state championship team and still holds EHS swimming records.

The season doesn’t get under way until after Labor Day when the Hornets open with Clover Park at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center. Bettencourt anticipates Peninsula and Lakes to be tough to beat in the South Puget Sound League 3A. The Hornets will also compete against Western Cascade Conference teams like North Thurston.
