Enumclaw 15-year-old Tyler Salsbury lead Team Washington to a fourth-place finish out of 12 teams at the Hogan Cup in Portland, Ore., Aug. 15 and 16. Salsbury, who started play with the Hornets Monday, shot an even-par 144 to tie for third place among the 48 elite junior golfers from eight western states and British Columbia.

Representing Washington with Salsbury were Kent Hagen, Covington, Zach Wanderscheid, Goldendale, and Li Wang, Sammamish.

The competition gets its name from Eddie Hogan, who was the head professional at Portland’s Riverside Golf and Country Club from 1939 until his drowning death in 1968. In honor of his memory, and his contributions to junior golf, the Eddie Hogan Cup Team matches were inaugurated in 1969.

Matches pit the junior players against each other in a team format. The four-man teams use their three lowest 18-hole scores each day to determine their team total. Medals are awarded to the top three teams as well as the top three individuals in the field.

Though the field is small, it is select. Professional players like Bobby Clampett, Fred Couples, Scott Simpson, Rick Fehr, Robert Gamez, Kirk Triplett, Peter Jacobsen and Tiger Woods have competed.
