GOLF: Sumner’s Barlow and Spanier finish within two strokes of each other at the middle of the state pack

Sumner High’s Brandon Barlow and Austin Spanier finished within two strokes of each other in the middle of the pack at the Class 2A state boys golf tournament May 25 at The Classic Golf Course in Spanaway.

Their combined performance earned the Spartans’ a sixth-place team with 49.50 points. Interlake won it with 102. Hockinson was second, W.F. West was third and Tumwater and Clarkston rounded out the Top 5.

The Spartans’ finish is among its best in history and with all six varsity members returning, four sophomores and two juniors, it bodes well for the future.

“We have really high hopes for next year, as all six of our players play year round, and have really dedicated themselves to golf,” coach Casey Adcox said.

Ryan Wallen of Blaine won the two-day tournament. He closed out the first day with a 1-over par 73 and a 2-under 70 on Day 2.

Sumner’s top finisher was Barlow, carding an 84 for the opening round and smoking the course for a 78 the following day for a 162 total.

Spanier shot matching 82s for a 164 two-day total and 29th.

“Brandon and Austin both played below their own standards on Day 1, but both really battled on Day 2, and while their rounds weren’t perfect they both had moments of brilliance,” Adcox said.

Spartans Kai Taylor and Tom Murphy missed the Day 1 cut, Taylor by one stroke.
