Spartans drop two in league play

Sumner High dropped a pair of games in South Puget Sound League 3A basketball action last week, falling to 2-12 in league and 3-15 overall in boys basketball play.
Franklin Pierce handed the Spartans a 65-37 loss at home Feb. 5.
The Cardinals started off the contest with a 17-6 run and led 26-15 at halftime. They outscored Sumner 49-22 in the second half.
Johnnie Greenwood led Sumner with nine points.
Sumner outscored the Lakes Lancers during three of the four periods Feb. 3 in Lakewood, but fell short 53-47.
Sumner fell behind early as the Lancers rolled out to a 20-4 first-period lead.
Slowly, the Spartans clipped away at the Lakes’ margin and trailed 41-30 entering the final period. Sumner outscored Lakes, 17-12, in the final period.
Casey Lafkas led the Spartans with 11 points.
The Spartans close out the season Friday at home against Bonney Lake.
