The 2015 Washington Cup at Emerald Downs received a record 72 nominations for the six-race Washington-bred stakes extravaganza on Sunday, Sept. 13.

Two-time defending Longacres Mile champion Stryker Phd tops 14 older horses nominated to the $60,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, the centerpiece of Washington Cup at 1 1/16 miles. A victory would tie Stopshoppingdebbie’s track record of eight consecutive stakes victories, a streak that begin with Stryker Phd’s triumph in the 2013 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic and includes the last two runnings of the Grade 3 Longacres Mile.

Trained by Larry Ross for Jim and Mona Hour, Stryker Phd also would surpass $500,000 in career earnings with a victory in the Classic. The 6-year-old Bertrando gelding is also one victory away from a second straight perfect season at Emerald Downs.

Five former WA Cup winners are nominated including the last two winners of the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic—Mike Man’s Gold (2014) and Stryker Phd (2013).

Other former winners are Seattles Best Copy, winner of the 2014 Northwest Farms Stakes, Madame Pele, winner of 2013 Comast SportsNet Stakes and 2014 Pegasus Training Center Stakes, and Noosito, winner of the 2013 Captain Condo Stakes and 2014 Chinook Pass Stakes. Madame Pele and Noosito both bid to become the first three-time WA Cup winners.

Washington Cup features two races for 2-year-olds and four races for older horses with an aggregate purse of $310,000. The 2015 race lineup is slightly different than previous years, with older males and older fillies and mares both getting a choice to run in either a route or sprint.

In fact, seven older males are cross nominated in both the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic and $50,000 Chinook Pass Sprint at 6 ½ furlongs, and eight older fillies and mares–led by Emerald Distaff winner Lady Rosberg–are nominated to both the $50,000 Pegasus Training Center Stakes at 1 1/16 miles and $50,000 Comcast SportsNet Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs.

Entries will be drawn Thursday at the Quarter Chute Café., with horses allowed to enter only one race.
