Enumclaw High topped the Sumner Spartans 113-69 in South Puget Sound League 3A boys swimming action Jan. 12 in Sumner.
Enumclaw captured the first event of the afternoon with a 1-minute, 49.72-second win in the 200-yard medley relay. Swimming for the Hornets were Thomas Petersen, Bennon VanHoof, Shane Jackson and Will Cooper. The Spartan team of Zane Gustafson, Trent Powers, Connor Powers-Hubbard and Brandon Richison placed second in 1:52.34.
The Hornets swept the 200 freestyle with Zack Petersen claiming first in 2:10.98. Braden Dedrick was second in 2:17.37 and Sam Horn third in 2:22.28.
Sumner answered with Hubbard, who won the 200 individual medley in a season-best 2:14.45. EHS’s VanHoof was right behind at 2:16.26.
The Spartans went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle with Powers finishing in a season-best 24:07 and Gustafson following with a season-best 25.59.
Enumclaw’s Garrett Hall led the diving with 165.37 points. Sumner’s Evan Quaschnick was second with 158.77 and Ben Schimming of EHS placed third with 152.40 points.
SHS kept the score close with a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly, Powers winning in 1:02.51 and Richison finishing second in 1:05.46.
Enumclaw put some distance between itself and the Spartans with its own 1-2 finish in the 100 freestyle. Horn won in 59.89 and Adam Kelly finished in 1:03.28.
Cooper’s 5:29.58 victory in the 500 freestyle extended EHS’s lead to 71-53. SHS’s Gustafson was second in 5:44.77.
The Hornets captured first and second in the 200 freestyle relay. First place went to the team of Jackson, Zach Petersen, Dedrick and Logan Ross in 1:45.47 and second being awarded to Kelly, Hall, Horn and Dale Opel in 1:49.88.
Enumclaw raced ahead with a sweep in the 100 backstroke led by Thomas Petersen, 1:04.75. Travis Culp, 1:07.89, and Gabe Sales, 1:12.09, were right behind.
VanHoof won the 100 beaststroke for EHS in 1:05.24. SHS’s Powers-Hubbard was second in a season-best 1:06.21.
Sumner finished up the meet with a 400 freestyle relay victory. Gustafson, Richison, Powers-Hubbard and Powers won in season-best 3:44.17. Enumclaw’s Cooper, Dedrick, Thomas Petersen and VanHoof were second in 3:58.96.
For Enumclaw, the victory pushed the Hornets to 5-1 in SPSL 3A swimming with one regular-season meet remaining. That meet was scheduled for Tuesday, results came too late to be published here. The Hornets will get their last opportunity to post district-qualifying times at that meet and again at the SPSL subdistrict meet. So far, the Hornets have qualified individuals Cooper, Thomas Petersen, Culp, VanHoof and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
It was another disappointing loss for the Spartans; however, coach Dana Powers said there were a number of great individual efforts that included a handful of season-best performances.
Best times included: 200 freestyle, Severn Anderson, 2.47.71, Tristan Hanon, 2.30.49, and Sam Parks 2.29.48; 200 individual medley, Shayd Breckenridge, 2.54.94, and Richison, 2.31.16; 50 freestyle, Sam Rigsby 27.44; diving, Curtis Downing, 55.22; 100 freestyle, Josh Goodsell, 1.12.08, Sam Parks, 1.06.81, and Pietro Pittella, 1.25.21; 100 backstroke, Pittella, 1.49.70, and Goodsell, 1.35.12; 100 breaststroke, Anderson, 1.25.00, and Rigsby, 1.29.28; 400 freestyle relay of Parks, Pitella, Anderson, Hanon, 5:13.10.
Breckenridge, 7.15.93, and Hanon, 6.44.75, bettered their times by more than 15 seconds in the 500 freestyle.
In addition to the subdistrict meet, Sumner has two more opportunities to post district qualifying times. The first was Tuesday with Peninsula, results came too late to be printed here, and the second is Thursday with Lakes. So far district qualifiers include: 200 medley relay team and 400 freestyle relay team as well as individuals Powers-Hubbard, Powers and Gustafson.
