In its opening meet of the season Dec. 8, the Enumclaw High boys swim team posted seven district-qualifying times as the team defeated Auburn Mountainview 119-64 in South Puget Sound League 3A action. The Hornets then topped Clover Park 136-23 Thursday to boost their league record to 2-0 before finishing sixth at the Holiday Relays at Rogers High Friday night.

The Hornets were scheduled to travel to Peninsula Tuesday – results came too late for here – and then host Lakes at 3:30 p.m. Thursday before taking time off until Jan. 7.

Right out of the blocks with the Lions, two of the Hornets’ 200-yard medley relay teams earned at spot in February’s district meet. Thomas Petersen, Bennon VanHoof, Shane Jackson and Will Cooper raced to a first-place, 1-minute, 49.26-second finish, while Travis Culp, Logan Ross, Braden Dedrick and Zack Petersen finished right behind in 1:56.93 for second.

EHS’s 200 freestyle relay of VanHoof, Ross, Adam Kelly and Dedrick finished second with a district time of 1:44.50 and the 400 freestyle relay of Cooper, Thomas Petersen, Culp and Jackson also finished second with a district time of 3:55.47. The Hornets’ 400 freestyle relay of Gabe Sales, Kelly, Nick Stopsack and Zach Petersen finished third in 4:17.82.

In his first outing as a Hornet, Cooper won the 50 and 500 freestyle with district-qualifying times of 24.08 and 5:21.04, respectively.

Petersen, a freshman, won the 100 backstroke with a district-qualifying time of 1:01.97. Culp finished second with a district time of 1:04.73 and Zach Petersen finished the sweep for Enumclaw taking third in 1:09.11.

VanHoof, also a freshman, raced to a 1:04.95 first-place, district-qualifying finish in the 100 breaststroke, just shy of a state time. Ross was second with a time of 1:15.33.

The Hornets also got top finishes from: Sales, second, 200 freestyle; VanHoof, first, 200 individual medley; and Zach Petersen first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.96.

Diver Garrett Hall captured first place with 144.50 points. Teammate Benjamin Schimming was second with 135.10.

Against Clover Park, the Hornets swept the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and went 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. Individually, race winners were: Culp, 200 freestyle, 2:16.9; VanHoof, 200 IM, 2:14.50; Dedrick, 50 freestyle, 25.85; Hall, diving, 164.4; Jackson, 100 butterfly, 1:08.60; Kelly, 100 freestyle, 1:00.70; Zach Petersen, 500 freestyle, 5:58.35; Thomas Petersen, 100 backstroke, 1:03.53; and VanHoof, 100 breast, 1:04.53.

The Hornets also got second-place finishes from: Stopsack, 200 freestyle; Jackson, 200 IM; Zach Petersen, 50 freestyle; Schimming, diving; Jeremy McCarthy, 100 butterfly; Culp, 100 freestyle; Stopsack, 500 freetyle; Sales, 100 backstroke; and Ross, 100 breast.
