SLIDESHOW: Panthers sprint to second Stage set for district showdowns

The South Puget Sound League 3A/Western Cascade Conference subdistrict track and field meet was staged Thursday and Saturday at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner, the initial postseason step that will eventually land the best athletes at the Class 3A state meet.

Next up is the West Central District meet Friday and Saturday at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma, which will send the top seven finishers in each event to the May 29-30 Class 3A state meet, also at Mount Tahoma.

Bonney Lake and Sumner girls

Bonney Lake girls finished second in the 1,600-meter relay, but it was enough to edge out Peninsula for the team title at the subdistrict championships.

The Panthers finished with 106.5 points and Peninsula had 102. Peninsula had a chance to win the title, but finished sixth in the 1,600-meter relay – the final event of the meet. Sumner was fifth with 68 points.

Senior Theresa Edwards, who ran the anchor leg in the relay, qualified in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter run. She was one of many who contributed in the win.

On Thursday, she placed second in the 3,200 in 11 minutes, 42.79 seconds and won the 1,600 in 5:10.17 – a personal best.

In the 1,600, Edwards didn’t break away until the final lap.

“I was trapped inside for the first three laps,” Edwards said. “It was a tough race because there were so many runners.”

Veronica Stinnett pulled away from Sumner senior Hillary Norris down down the stretch and won the 800 in 2:21.58 – her second-best time of the season. She ran a personal best 2:20 in Thursday’s prelims.

The junior also qualified in the 1,600 with a third-place time of 5:13.02 and was on the 4×400 team.

Senior Shelby Rowland upset Enumclaw’s Stephanie Jones in a close race in the 110-meter hurdles. Rowland beat Jones by a fraction of a second – 15:63 to 15:66. Sumner’s Kaylee Holloway was fifth at 16.12 and Bonney Lake’s Kimber Kober was sixth at 16:34, both advancing to districts.

In the 300-meter hurdles, the Panthers had two girls advance. Haylie Cannon finished fourth, 48.17, and teammate Sandra Meyer was sixth in 48.25.

Holloway was seventh at 48.27.

Norris, a favorite in the 800 and 1,600, finished second in both events. Norris ran a 5:11.36 in the 1,600 and the 800 in 2:23.85.

Assistant coach Scott Drennen said Norris developed blisters early in the day.

“She was running on bare skin,” Drennen said. “But she’s a tough runner and I expect she’ll be ready for the district meet.”

Bonney Lake and Sumner’s 1,600-meter relay teams advanced. The Panthers were second behind Peninsula at 50.87 and Sumner took sixth at 52.86. Bonney Lake finished seventh in the 800-meter relay at 1:51.23.

Sumner’s Ashlee Sincraugh and Lauren Bulzomi finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 400. Sincraugh’s time was 59.15 and Bulzomi had a mark of 1:01.58.

Haylie Cannon will represent Bonney Lake in the 100 meters after she finished fifth at 13.18.

In the field events, Bonney Lake has three girls advancing in the shot put. Tiara Killmer took first with a throw of 39 feet, 11 inches, while freshman Adara Winder was fourth at 35-3. Natosha Lyonais took seventh at 32-11.25.

Sumner’s Kayla Roberts advanced with a sixth-place finish, 33-3.5, in the shot.

Killmer also advanced in the javelin with a sixth-place mark of 94-3.

Sumner’s Jessica Vandergiessen was fourth in the high jump at 4-10, while teammate Courtney Perkins took sixth at 4-8. Vandergiessen finished fourth, 34-3.25, in the triple jump and Kober was sixth at 32-10.5.

Michaela Trulson of Sumner finished fourth in the pole vault at 8-3.

Bonney Lake’s Taylor Howick was third in the long jump at 15-8.25.

Bonney Lake finished ninth with 41 points and Sumner was 11th with 22.

Bonney Lake’s Chris Pokorny advanced in the 200- and 400-meter dash. He took fifth in the 200 at 22.82 seconds. He finished fourth in the 400 at 51.09, while teammate Cale Snider was sixth at 51.76.

The Panthers’ Brandon Baumchen was third in the 800 with of 1 minute, 57.88 seconds. He also was fourth in the 1,600 at 4:32.55.

Bonney Lake relay teams advanced in the 4×100 and 4×400. The Panthers finished fifth in the 4×100 at 44.77 and third in the 4×400 at 3:26.60.

Sumner was seventh in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 46.84.

In the field events, Sumner’s Kevin Johnson and Grant Stevens finished tied for third at 12 feet.

Bonney Lake’s Josh Kahnow was seventh in the high jump at 5-10 and Lee Boggan took sixth in the triple jump at 41-03.5.

Alex Griffith and Seth Rodriquez will represent Sumner in the throwing events. Griffith placed third in the discus with a throw of 142.03 and Rodriquez was sixth in the javelin at 164-3.

White River

White River’s girls placed seventh among the 13 teams in the field, while the Hornet boys were eighth.

The White River girls were paced at subdistricts by freshman Lauryn Wate, who finished third in the 800 meters and fourth in the 3,200. Her times were 2 minutes, 24.60 seconds and 5:15.13, respectively.

Also advancing to the WCD meet were Hailey Menzel, third in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, 6 inches; Kristine Brons, fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.20; Carley McCutchen, fifth in the long jump, 15-5.25; Ashley Llapitan, sixth in the 3,200 meters, 11:52.57; Cassidy France, sixth in the 200 meters, 27.55; Hillary Mower, seventh in the high jump, 4-4; and Kelly Coyle, seventh in the pole vault; 7-9.

The Hornet girls were plenty tough in the relays, qualifying teams in all three events. White River was second in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:48; third in the 1,600 relay, 4:12.73; and fifth in the 400 relay, 52.82.

The White River boys’ subdistrict experience was headed by the championship performance of freshman Marcus Dickson, who bested the 1,600-meter field with a time of 4:26.78.

Other individual qualifiers for the Hornets were Collin Green, third in the 400 meters, 50.62; Austin Shirey, tied for third in the pole vault, 12-0; Kramer Green, fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, 40.63; and Matt Dickson, seventh in the 800 meters, 2:02.60. White River’s Grant Peckham advanced in two events, placing fifth in the discus with a toss of 140-07 and seventh in the shot put with an effort of 45-04.5.

Additionally, the Hornets’ 1,600-meter relay team took second with a time of 3:24.84, setting a school record in the process.

Enumclaw

The Enumclaw High girls placed fourth and the Hornet boys claimed sixth during the subdistrict meet.

Abe Kellogg turned in a fine subdistrict performance to lead the Enumclaw High squad. He won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.64 and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 39.99.

Other Hornet boys advancing to this week’s West Central District meet were Larry Calvert, second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.25 and fifth in the 1,600 meters, 4:32.96; Joe Berger, third in the 3,200 meters, 10:07.31; KevinOlsen, fifth in the javelin, 167-02; Braden Timpe, sixth in the 800, 3:00.68; pole vaulters David Brazier and Clifford Newman, who tied for sixth by clearing 11-6; and the 1,600-meter relay team, which placed seventh with a time of 3:30.63.

The Enumclaw girls received a pair of championship performances from junior Stephanie Schreiner, who topped the field in both the 400 meters and the long jump. She finished the 400 in 58.61 and sailed 17-01.75 to win the long jump. She also qualified in the 200 meters with a time of 26.88.

Also with a big day was Stephanie Jones, who won the triple jump by bounding 35-09.50, and also qualified for districts in both hurdle races. She was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.66 and third in the 300-meter version, finishing in 48.11.

Other EHS girls heading to the WCD meet are Carissa Gwerder, fourth in the 800 meters, 2:27.48; Emily Eilertson, sixth in the 800 meters, 2:28.06; Becca Cross, sixth in the 100 meter dash, 13.28; and AnnaMarie Forza, seventh in the javelin with a toss of 93-0.

Additionally, the EHS girls qualified teams in all three relay events. The 400-meter squad was third with a time of 50.94, the 800-meter team was fifth in 1:50.14 and the 1,600-meter crew was seventh in 4:18.53.
