Sumner High’s fastpitch squad had one real notable dilemma last week, in that it couldn’t seem to capitalize on its opposition’s errors and lost the two games it played by slim margins.

When the Spartan girls traveled to the Enumclaw’s Boise Creek Sixplex April 15, they came close to winning as Enumclaw registered six miscues. Sumner scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but the comeback fell short as the Spartans left the bases loaded in the seventh inning and lost 8-5.

It was much the same thing at Peninsula Thursday, as speedy Sumner shortstop Krista Beers belted a fifth-inning home run to put Sumner ahead 2-0 against the Seahawks, who committed five errors.

Despite a sterling pitching effort by Sumner freshman Megan Anderson, that slim advantage didn’t hold up, as Peninsula pulled up its rally socks in the bottom of the seventh and notched three runs to win 3-2, reducing Sumner’s South Puget Sound League record to 3-5.

Sumner made a journey to Clover Park Tuesday, with the results coming too late to report here. At 4p.m. today, Wednesday, the Spartans host a tough Auburn Mountainview squad.
