The Sumner High girls had just six hits, but took advantage of five Lakes errors as the Spartans needed just five innings for a 12-2 South Puget Sound League 3A home-field victory March 31 over the Lancers.

The Spartans opened up a 1-0 lead after the first two innings.

Krista Beers reached base on a Lakes throwing error and later stole second. After Kari Hester walked, Mandy Humphries drilled a single to center field that scored Beers and Hester.

The Lancers’ pitcher walked Rory Zambard to put runners at first and second. Abbey Simmons’ hard grounder went to the pitcher, but another throwing error allowed Humphries to cross home plate.

With Zambard on third and Simmons on first, Megan Anderson drilled a single to left field to bring home both runners. Anderson made her way to second, then stole third. With two outs, Anderson stole home on another Lakes error.

Lakes scored a run in the second, but all nine Sumner batters were at the plate during the inning.

Hester singled to score Beers, then Hester scored off a Humphries double to left field.

After Zambard walked, Humphries stole third and later scored on Simmons’ grounder to the pitcher.

With Zambard on third, Simmons stole second with Anderson at the plate. Anderson drove the ball to shallow center field as Zambard scored.

Simmons reached home on Dani Babcock’s single.

Sumner added another run in the third and Lakes scored in the fourth before the game was called in the fifth because of the 10-run rule.

Hester and Humphries led Sumner with two hits. Humphries and Anderson finished with four RBIs and Hester had two.

On the mound, Katie Littlefield held Lakes to three hits, struck out six and walked five for the win.

Sumner broke a 5-5 tie with six runs in the eighth inning for an 11-7 win at Auburn Mountainview in SPSL 3A action March 30.

Sumner took a 3-0 lead in the third, but the Lions answered with three runs in the fourth to tie the game.

The Spartans scored two more in the sixth and Auburn Mountainview recorded a pair of runs in the seventh.

“I’m very pleased with the intensity I saw by the girls,” coach Kim Fergus said. “They stay focused throughout the entire game and in the extra inning we were able to string together some hits and take advantage of some miscues.”

Simmons was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate and drove in three runs for Sumner, while Babcock added two homers and had five RBIs. The Spartans collected 11 hits.

Littlefield, who gave up five hits, picked up the win for Sumner. She struckout eight and walked seven.

The Lions committed nine errors in the loss.

Today, Wednesday, the Spartans host White River for a SPSL 3A battle, then travel to Bonney Lake Friday for another league contest.
