Scholes tosses personal best in games’ discus

Antoinette Scholes easily surpassed her personal best in the discus June 5, winning a Junior Olympics qualifying meet at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.

As a result, she will head to Norfolk, Va., July 7 to compete in the National AAU Junior Olympic Games. The national meet runs July 30 through Aug. 7 at Norfolk State University.

Scholes, a student at White River High School, threw the discus 116 feet, 3 and one-half inches. Her previous best was 108-8.

Hessler scores hole in one at Lake Wilderness

Enumclaw’s Virginia Hessler aced the 16th hole at Lake Wilderness Golf Course June 8.

Hessler, who is a member of the Enumclaw Ladies Golf Club, scored her first hole in one with an 11 wood on a 100-yard par-3 at the Maple Valley area golf course. Betty French was there to witness the feat. They were playing the ladies tees.

EHS graduate Grager leads WSU to rugby title

Mileka Grager earned a state championship as a high school athlete. Now, as a sophomore at Washington State University, she can add a national title to her athletic resumé.

Grager, a 2008 Enumclaw High graduate, is a member of the WSU women’s rugby team that took on all comers during the recently-completed season and won every game on the way to the Division II championship.

A multi-sport athlete at EHS, Grager captured the state Class 3A title in the javelin to cap her senior season.

Her size and physical attributes have landed her as a two-year starter at lock, one of the eight forward positions. She has been part of a great two-year run for the WSU ruggers, who advanced to the semifinals of last year’s national tournament.

In the opening round of this year’s tournament, played in Florida, WSU defeated Stonehill College 68-7 and eased past Winona State University 5-3. That qualified the Cougars for a trip to Palo Alto, Calif., and the national finals. The two-day finale saw WSU defeat Norwich University 15-5 in the semis, earning the right to challenge the Temple Owls for the championship.

Grager, 20, played a key role in helping the Cougars set a successful tone in the finals. She and prop Tiffany Gaden converted the first two tries of the game, giving WSU the momentum it would never relinquish. After the forward fronts contributed early, the Cougs’ backs did the rest, boosting the team to a 37-0 shutout victory.
