Sumner swim heads to state prelimaries

The Sumner girls swim team continues to make waves as they fought through districts last week. The Spartans entered districts with only Madison Munger qualified for state. They took second place overall and qualified for all three relays and five individual events.

The girls heading to state include:

Munger in the 200 individual medley, 200 medley and freestyle relays.

Alicia Ditty in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Petria Russell in the 500 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay and a possible wildcard in the 200 freestyle.

Iliana Kaiser in the 100 backstroke, 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

MichaelAnn Wilson in the 500 freestyle, 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Katie Korbuszewki in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Kali Barnes as a possible wildcard in the 1 meter diving.

Alternates include:

Kristin Easterly, 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays

Brittany Tuffs, 200 Medley, 200 and 400 freestyle relays

Sophie Walker, 400 freestyle relay

Payton Focht, 400 freestyle relay

District highlights included Munger’s best 200 individual medley time of the season, placing second with 2 minutes, 16.13 seconds.

The 500 freestyle was Sumner’s superstar event, said Coach Dana Powers. All three swimmers – Russell, Wilson and Walker – dropped a significant amount of time to place fifth, sixth and nine respectively.

Ditty placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.73 and Kaiser placed fifth with her best time of 1:09.10. On her leg of the 400 freestyle relay – joined by Kaiser, Korbuszewki and Russell — Ditty broke the one minute barrier, coming in at 59.84.

State preliminaries are on Friday. If the girls continue climbing up and knocking down time, they will advance to finals on Saturday.
