White River High’s Marcus Dickson was a two-time district champion last week and will lead a field of 10 Hornet athletes into the coming state Class 2A track and field championships.

The three-day state meet begins Thursday and will be contested at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma  High School.

Dickson took top honors in both the 800-meter run and the 1,600 meters. He clocked a time of 1 minute, 57.04 seconds in the shorter distance and finished in 4:25.56 in the 1,600.

Devin Liebel also will compete in two events at state after top-six finishes in both hurdle races. He was second at district in the 300-meter race, finishing in 39.84, and was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.74.

Also earning state trips among the White River boys were Austin Shirey, second in the pole vault with an effort of 13 feet, 6 inches, and Anthony Dove, who placed fifth in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.92. Also qualifying for state was the 4×400-meter relay team of Dove, Josh Miller, Austin May and Liebel; the quartet covered the distance in 3:26.08.

Leading the way for the White River girls will be Kelly Coyle, who captured the district championship by clearing 10-00 in the pole vault.

Other Hornet girls making the state trip are two-time district placer Lauryn Wate, who was fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:13.59 and sixth in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:21.90; Alyssa Aashiem, sixth in the javelin with a throw of 109-06; and Jade Crawford, sixth in the 100 m hurdles with a time of 17.37.
