White River High’s girls wrestling team kept rolling with a fourth-place finish at Saturday’s Kelso tournament, which included 39 teams from Washington and Oregon.

Kelso won with 145 points. Centralia followed with 97.5, Fife was third at 97 and the Hornets finished with 96.

The Hornets started the grind Thursday with a 60-12 league win over Washington, before heading to Kelso Friday for dual-meet action, where the team topped Lynden 48-21, but got run over by Kelso in Round 2.

Saturday, Sam Mitchell won the 195-pound title, topping her final two opponents by pin.

Mikaela Kilcup also won her 170-pound crown by fall.

Kylie Norton and Ericka Jackson earned fifth-place finishes for the Hornets.

Katie Johnson, Jesslyn and Kendra Blue and Erika Nelson-Selby won matches to help bolster the Hornets’ team score.

In round robin and nonscoring B brackets, Tyanna Coy took home her first wrestling medal and saw her first dual meet and tournament competition. Jamie Meagher placed second, while Kalynn Gulin won a third-place medal.

Morgan Shirey and Tatyana Barron also competed.

Coach Rich Valdez said it was a competitive weekend.

“Just two points separated fourth and second and we were missing two-time state placer Dylan Fagan to a sore knee,” he said.

Against Washington, the Hornets got pins from Gulin, Kendra Blue, Norton and Jesslyn Blue.
