With five pins and four forfeits, the White River High wrestling team slammed Sumner 60-15 Thursday for the South Puget Sound League 2A title.

The Hornets, who posted a 63-16 win Jan. 26 over Fife, went undefeated for the league title. The team’s only two dual-meet losses were to Class 3A state runner-up Enumclaw and defending Class 1A state champion Orting, both nonleague contests.

It was the Hornets’ first league title in several years.

“It’s a big accomplishment for the kids and another step in the right direction,” coach Joe Klein said.

White River will host the 16-man bracket, subregional tournament Friday and Saturday. Start time Friday is 4:30 p.m. Saturday’s competition, which will also feature the Lady Hornets in an eight-wrestler bracket, begins at 10 a.m. This year, instead of a junior varsity qualifier, each team will place two wrestlers in each weight bracket. For the boys, the top four place winners advance to the regional tournament Feb. 12 at Franklin Pierce. The girls will advance the top four to Shelton for the regional tournament.

Thursday for the crown, the Hornets scored pins from Richard Geddes at 119 pounds, Brandon Short, 135, Austin Shirey, 140, Caden Pugmire, 160, and Jeff Kisner, 215. Hornet Cody Schwab earned a 6-4 win at 103 pounds, while Tyler Kilcup won a close 5-4 contest at 189.

The Hornets also put together a five-pin, four-forfeit night against Fife, getting falls form Short, Tony Tyler, Pugmire, Chris Skinner and Dave Meagher.
